Julie Wartell is the crime analyst coordinator for the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. She was previously the project director of the East Valley COMPASS (Community Mapping, Planning, and Analysis for Safety Strategies) initiative, a crime analyst for the San Diego Police Department, senior research and technology associate at the Institute for Law & Justice, a research associate at the Police Executive Research Forum, and a fellow at the National Institute of Justice Crime Mapping Research Center. Ms. Wartell has conducted a wide range of research on various crime problems and police issues, worked on the San Diego Police Department’s strategic plan, coordinated the development of a series of crime mapping training modules, and conducted extensive training of police officers and crime analysts in crime analysis and problem-oriented policing. She has edited or authored numerous publications, including Crime Mapping Case Studies: Successes in the Field. Ms. Wartell holds a master’s degree in public administration from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at San Diego.
