
Julie Wartell is an independent consultant, and has spent over 30 years working with local, state and federal criminal justice agencies and communities around crime analysis, research and prevention. She has worked as a crime analyst for police and prosecutors, managed a regional crime-mapping initiative, conducted research and evaluation for non-profits, and served as a National Institute of Justice fellow. She has studied and assessed a wide range of crime problems, police and prosecutor processes, and information technologies. She has conducted extensive training and made presentations to police officers, prosecutors, analysts, and community groups internationally on topics relating to crime and problem analysis, and has edited or authored numerous publications. Julie teaches courses on crime prevention through environmental design and crime analysis, as well as conducts research, at the University of California–San Diego. She holds a master's in public administration from San Diego State University and a postgraduate diploma in applied criminology and police management from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
